eclipse

i hear eclipse and right away associate it with westlife's cover of total eclipse of the heart, but in the real world, an eclipse is something as special. this lunar eclipse, that will not happen again until december 2010, was a bit of a disappointment, as much as my ability to capture it was. but maybe by 2010 i will have perfected my photo-taking skills, or even better by that time i may own a really nice camera, and a telescope. who knows?

so long.

i've got my sunglasses

view from this morning's drive

a tuesday afternoon stroll

sydenham river

my return was delayed by a day as i had disappeared into a winter wonderland. however frustrsating the driving is in snow, the sheer beauty of it all makes it surely worth it.

of course i did take my camera along to try and take some snapshots of my adventures. but with my luck the batteries died when i was at inglis falls. and so i did not have the chance to capture my brother's friend jumping up into a tree only to fall backwards with the tree in his arms. but i can assure you that it was the one of the funniest things i have seen so far this year.
as for hockey: we got our satellite installed right on time for me to watch a devils beating of the senators. of course all of that was forgotten, when the senators finally registered a win on tuesday night. of course i am grieved by that fact that sportsnet east did not let me watch the game. as for other hockey: i did get to watch my brother's hockey practice, which is very entertaining, especially since some of the children have a skating ability that resembles mine. but, i did catch the winning breakaway goal on video, so it can go somewhere in the family files.

that is all for now, i think i will post a sign at the front door, warning: cleaning frenzy ahead, because this house could use some cleaning.

2 days until Matchbox Twenty :-)

interestingly, this approach does not always work as well for me either. i think i need to order a cartoon titled "death by integration," kind of like a sequel to "death by summation." so, following from an earlier post, even if calculus sucks, and hockey sucks, there is always love.

to forget and not to forget

allright so after a fun-packed weekend, i want to forget about the monday that followed it. although forgetting calculus will result in instant failure, it might be good to forget about it for a minute: and what better to do than read up on hockey. so just remembring:

funnel cake, roller coasters and integrals

between studying for an upcoming calculus mid-term i am listening to the senators vs. panthers and am thinking about roller coasters and funnel cakes. maybe because this game for a sens fan is like stepping on a roller coaster after you have eaten a little too much funnel cake. you're going up and down not sure whether to open your eyes or just close them, because you might miss some scenic sights, but the chance of bugs in your eyes is too great, and the anticipation of going full circle with a stomach full of funnel cake is simply dangerous. it is better to just close your eyes and hope that you don't throw up over the handsome ride attendant when the ride is over. after all, you can't really trust your stomach. (23 seconds left, eyes closed).

allright, so maybe a little far fetched, but i am sure my mind has taken me stranger places.

i think calculus might have something to do with it. after all, it is one of the world's greater evils.

aside from this, i saw a trailer on a new documentary called the "demographic winter" which brings to light the concerns of declining birth rates. i am especially interested in this, because someone in a discussion after the screening of the 11th hour suggested Canada should adopt a one child policy. i should have told him he was crazy. in a most broad sense, i really believe that in building stronger families, and encouraging people's sense of place, belonging and purpose we would be able to solve a lol of social, environmental and economic problems. here again, i think as a student of economics, there is a lot to be aspiring to, and new opportunities for change will arise. and i am very exicted about that :-)

lollipops and rainbows

today is the day of superbowl XLII, and currently the patriots are leading the giants 7-3. i have to admit i have no idea what that means, if that is a comfortable winning margin or not, but it looks interesting. also interesting because it is so true: from urban dictionary dot com

Person 1: Who do you think will win the Superbowl?

Person 2: What's that? Oh, those men running in between the commercials?

either way football is much more interesting than UFC fighting, which apparently does attract many male fans that enjoy watching muscled and slippery men. and also much more interesting than another sports debacle that may have occurred the other night.

after some intense searching, or googling/dogpiling/yahooing if you will, i could only find one article of interest about theories of optimism. this article, based on a questionnaire suggests that optimism and pessimism are postively and negatively (respectively) related to religiosity and superstition, and are not at all related to the illusion of control. now, this is completely relevant to the idea that superstition takes hold in the NHL and that a fanbase cannot feel optismistic or
pessimistic on the basis of any control, because the entity that is supposed to extend some level of control is out of control. yeah, i know. basically i would like to offer the argument that the NHL officiating sucks. and that it in itself needs not be argued. it is more like common knowledge. like the norm. or more like hearsay. no, actually like the obvious. so no wonder fans base their
feelings of optimism or pessimism on religion or superstition, and that their team has been grappled by some sort of a curse. and i feel like it has to do with alfredsson. and i don't like it.
but to conclude: nhl officiating can't make a game. but it can break it. and that is an injustice and needless frustration for the blue-collar hockey fan.

wow. that was as much ranting i can do in a semi-public setting. and i think that the fact that i dreamt that cliff fletcher died in our house has something to do with it [insert shivers]. so not everything is rosemary and sunshine. lollipops and rainbows. but you know, that makes life interesting.

superbowl update: nothing happened ... yet.

superbowl update 2: the giants have taken a lead, but the patriots are getting really close. and i am unwillingly becoming nervous. 2:49 left.

spring is in the air

it is official: an early spring. despite all the hype, or really non-hype, i don't think i can explain how sorry i feel for willie.

but winter is not over yet, and good thing, because i would feel really sad if our snowman would melt so soon. although spring = nhl playoffs, and those can't seem to come soon enough. because maybe then, just maybe, some teams can pretend to care to play some badass hockey. either way, i would be okay if said team would try tonight, because a good battle of ontario is a good battle of ontario. go sens go!

choosing life

20 years or 2 decades too long, canada has been suffering from lawlessness. the fact that there is no law, whatsoever, that regulates abortion, not even to a minimal extent has been a concern for 20 years to this day. as today marks the anniversary of the supreme courth decision to decriminalize abortion, there are people that celebrate and those that mourn. i find myself in both camps, because there is the chance to celebrate life, while also mourn the lives that have been lost. these are just some of the words i heard today at a candlelight vigil to mark the anniversary of the decision made by the supreme court of canada.
i can say a lot of things, but a lot of things have been said and will be said, so here i take the opportunity to be silent for 3 million lives that have been lost.

world economy

i've always enjoyed political cartoons. taken from Kal's cartoons at economist.com
as for other interesting articles i would recommend anyone reading the site, seeing that their print copies are so terribly expensive.

a certain something, certain

oddly, i always pick the wrong weekends to go home, which incidentally makes them so right as well. despite horrid driving conditions that i usually encouter (snow this time, fog last time, and ... tornadoes next time?) i am not complaining -> it is always nice to have a sign of winter, when well ... it is winter. and i did venture out in the morning to capture some of the picturesque scenes of winter. and no one, i mean no one, is too old to make snow angels. it did take however a great amount of effort to get a picture taken without the dog running through:
view from my window:
despite all my efforts, i still did not get this picture to rotate quite right. either way i thought it was a nice representation of the canadian winter. afterwards we did make some attempts to play road hockey in the snow, but with all the snow there was a certain lack of visibility of the ball.
now here is to hoping that the snow will remain for at least a month, so that when reading week rolls around a mini-ski trip will involve real snow, rather than the fake stuff.
just last week, i also had the chance to visit dad at the lodge he is staying at, while going through treatments. and just located downtown toronto on jarvis street, we had the chance to go out for dinner at the keg. this particular location is also called the mansion house, and let me tell you know, it is a mansion indeed. the bathrooms are nicer than the average restaurant, and the bar is on a separate floor. and not only that, the service is wonderful, and the food is some of the best i have ever eaten. so, i guess in some sense this can be considered a restaurant review[insert 4 stars].
as for other things: hockey let's say, the ottawa senators are still pretty hot, even though their play is pretty cold. i guess that will make it easier to let some of the guys go when murray makes some nice trade at the trade deadline to make this time a little stronger. gotta love'em though. tonight OTT vs. FLA.
with 3 seminar courses, 1 math course, and grad school applications and deadlines looming over me, i better get back to work. i have a proposal due tomorrow, and frankly i dont think 24 hours will be enough to understand the milk support pricing systems in Canada. but, i am not complaining, just presenting some facts.

i have been wondering about 19th century novels. there always seems to be so much discussion about politics, philosophy and theology in dinner conversations, and i am just wondering if authors like jane austen, or the brontes and them did a lot of research on their topics or that they should be considered philosophers themselves. such as this little excerpt out of North and South:

Nothing like the act of eating for equalising men. Dying is nothing to it. The philosopher does sententiously - the pharisee ostentatiously - the simple-hearted humbly - the poor idiot blindly, as the sparrow falls to the ground; the philosopher and idiot, publican and pharisee, all eat after the same fashion - given an equally good digestion. There's a theory for theory for you!

for the NHL All-Star game in Atlanta the East will be looking good. looking real good.

today the final roster was announced, and Ottawa's very own pizza-line (cash-line), or whatever the blog-o-sphere has dubbed them, made it. so together with Paddock as the coach the Ottawa senators are nicely represented. i guess, me voting almost a 100 times for volchenkov was to no avail, but i don't think the league supports crazy. crazy fans that is. but you know, sometimes recognition is due, where recognition is due.

the rest of the line-up is here (which is also where i copied and pasted these pictures from). i have to say, for some odd reason i clearly remember the day that i learned the print screen function on my keyboard, when i was in grade 10, and frankly we have been inseparable ever since.

"hockey now sleep later"

i mean hockey now, work later. it is only january. first week of school, that should be allowed right?

tonight the hamilton bulldogs took on the binghamton senators for the second time of the season here in hamilton. and of course tonight was extra special because carey price had come home ... well. maybe he does not like to think that. but i am sure some people might.

the game was rather uneventful ... except for two minutes of 5-on-3, which the senators managed to kill off brilliantly. like ... brilliantly. one of the "bad boys" is shown here. i just can't help but think that he looks so terribly innocent.

and some more shots.
good guys:
bad guys: i guess the photo means i don't have to tell you who won the game (in overtime though) but i guess, if these guys are the good guys, except for four nights a year, than i am probably not all that unhappy. but ... laperrier is gone, but d'agostini is in my doghouse now. and considering that the senators have had a lot of injury problems, these guys did pretty good. and i have to admit i am not very good at taking pictures. and so this shot came after the lying flat-on-top-of-each-other moment had passed. but still i think price might have had some colourful words to say to #9. who i would not mind seeing called up anytime in the future.

that's all folks. final score: 3-2. ottawa playing again tomorrow. and saturday. and sunday. and i only have 50 more minutes of class until the weekend. woohoo.

horoscope horrors

"you know what you want and aren't afraid to do whatever is in your power to get it. you are a wonderful homemaker"

"you will hear some good news today that may have to do with your recent hard work and success"

"today, you may be taking on far more responsibility than is yours to deal with. try to work at lightening your load"

"try to focus on the positive today and you may find yourself becoming happier with the present situation"

i say horoscope horrors because i am far from taking horoscopes to heart, but it is scary the day that grades come out that my horoscope suggests i will hear good news regarding what i have been working on, or that i am a good homemaker on the day that i spend cleaning the house, or that i know what i want while i was working on a job application for a job that i really want. craz-i-ness!

instant coffee and little timbits here and there

funny thing is ... i am instantly happy when matchbox twenty comes on on the radio.

and i have finally a few references lined up for this one job application. who ever knew that job applications and searching for suitable references would be so excruciating.

in the meantime though i am enjoying this snow and glad i can't leave the house to do anything, and just have to stay in and be a little lazy ... although i dont think i can stay away from the library too long, it is just time to read something i actually want to read. and the list of must read books is getting terribly long. in the meantime though: i am doing homework and thinking very hard about possible research topics for my modern japan history seminar, and my economics thesis. any thoughts for the second class?

ps. i hope alfonzo americano (or for short i decided to call him hugo) does not feel like i am cheating on him, now that i am home and using my parents (un)reliable and slow computer, which just happens to have the internet on it. and also ... it was nice to find that my parents had bought a bigger sreen tv so that watching hockey is instantly more enjoyable, but at the same time we lost a channel. so now we are down to 4. i am thinking that trip to the library is becoming very important soon.

world wide web

of all the place i could be writing a post from ... i am at sunnibrook hospital in toronto. the last few weeks have been a rollercoaster, and now i am waiting, waiting, and waiting. i have already read every magazine they have in the lobby, and all the newspapers have my fingerprints on them ... and then i found this little gem, and black box, a computer of all things, with full internet access. so here is where i watched the highlights from last night's game ... and watching heatza scores many goals, while crosby is frustrated with our very own gerbz .. made me smile a little.

the news is not all bad ... dad is going to holland. and when he comes back treatment will begin. it won't be easy, but this place has a positive vibe. which is good, because in the next year i am planning to visit quite a few times. anyhow, i am logging off so my lil brother can play games on this thing, while i go searching or something else to read ... then, off to the airport.

purposeful purposium

while i was reading the globe and mail from 1979, i came across this picture of levesque i believe. in its original context it was about the referendum on sovereignty, but i just tweaked it a tiny bit to show something a bit more current (ugly picture though ...)

if i had a camera i would have taken some pictures of the earrings i got from my not so secret santa. i am ecstatic about spending sometime away from studying and ... well, you know ... studying. but then there is always the little reminders about more important things in life.

i always joke a bit about my "purposes" and usefulness around here. but in the meantime i have been reading rick warren's "the purpose-driven life" and am glad to be assured that i have some definite purpose. this purpose is outlined under 5 headings: you were planned for God's pleasure, you were formed for God's family, you were created to become like Christ, you were shaped for serving God, you were made for a mission. enough purpose for me then.

impressions

now that i am sitting here on a sunday morning, eating pepernoten, i am thinking about the fact that i really should have written this post last night when my ears were still ringing and i was lying awake with the moon shining in my face. then i would have been somewhat productive. but maybe the fact that i came home to find out the senators had lost yet again to a no-good team had me shut down the computer, who i have named alfonzo americano, in disgust. so maybe when neither "darth gerber" or mr. swedish delight himself can/will bail out the team they are just average. nah ... i am talking nonsense. they are never just average. plus if they were playing just average it is because they have probably forgotten they needed to show some of the loyalty to their fans that we have shown them. relationships are hard work.

good thing it could not ruin a good night though, which included taking in a performance by the trans-siberian orchestra at copps coliseum. seeing that i am a newbie at all things concert, i have some many questions and thoughts about the concert. i want to know things like whether or not the stage belongs to the band, what they do in the summer, whether or not they have health problems from being subjected to the lighting all the time, etc. but really, at some point i was sure that the guitarists were not actually playing because they were running up and down the stage, throwing their heads up and down and ... well everything else they do on guitar hero. it just seems so impossible to still be able to play so well and synchronized ....

i had a great time just watching the constructions in the air as part of the lightshow. or the the lightshow itself i am convinced would have to have been constructed by geniuses, with a lot of imagination, and taste for colour. i mean the constructions looked like spaceships in a sky filled with stars. cool!

altogether though it was such a good mix of funny, and touching. the narrative that played throughout the first half was the story of christmas eve. although it is too long to reiterate, there was a subtle message against terrorism. it was very touching that the narrator described the ruins in the middle east on christmas eve from which one chello played ... which then moved into one of greatest performances of carol of the bells.

this video is from this year's performance in pittsburgh, and was very similar to the one in hamilton. it includes parts of a number of songs, but was very entertaining:

i also really loved the drummer solo. like really really loved it. i mean, no one normal person should be able to move that fast ... no joke.

about halfway of the show, one of the lead guitarists? vocalists? ( i don't really know because they all look the same) came out wearing a leafs jersey, number 13 to be exact, and the ensuing ensemble of cheers and boos was quite funny. i think i performed my duty of boo-ing as loud as i could, while the guys in front of us looked back at the loud and mixed response of 6 girls behind them. we are a house divided.

allright these were just some of my thoughts about last night. would definitely recommend seeing it. to anyone.

i dont know what you are talking about ...

while i am trying to finish a 15 page paper tonight, i had to make a quick comment:

it sounds like someone is being slaughtered downstairs, while i am listening to sil tu me amas - il divo. it adds a lot of drama, and i feel like a helpless bystander.

that someone - by the way - is the ottawa senators who are playing the buffalo sabres tonight, which is on tsn, and half the house is watching. i am missing it, but then maybe the memory will only be the sounds, not supplemented with video evidence. this way i can more easily pretend it never happened.

i thought this was a pretty cool desktop background ...

warning: this is a random posting. i will not be held responsible for any utterings of sorts.

i blame facebook for making me think of "gesiena is ...." everytime i try to think of something to post.

yikes i just looked sideways and paul walker is seriously staring at me. i think i should consider readjusting the pictures on my wall again.

based on a discussion i had with a friend today i am really curious to know whether or not there are any cowboys in holland. i am thinking not.

and ... happy birthday julie!

on a hockey note ...

"allright then. i guess i should be happy because the thrashers fans are happy. i guess i should be happy because the capitals fans are happy. i guess i should be happy because the hurricanes fans are happy. i guess i should be happy because the canadiens fans are happy. i guess i should be happy because the bruins fans are happy. but i am not really feeling it. but then again it is just a game. or not? i can't really decide. am sure hoping that the above list does not get any longer."

i wrote this exactly one year ago, (when almost every post was about hockey) ... two things are for sure: 1. time flies. 2. time heals all wounds, because we all know in the end it was not so bad ... now why did i look this up? i am just a tad bitter about them losing today. even if i did not watch. or listen. or follow it.

whatever. i need to study.

if you knew i was in economics you would have thought i was smarter than this. i mean i should be the queen of efficiency and productivity. but here you have it. the truth is uncovered. i am not:

university 101: always carry an umbrella

i am thankful for many many things. but especially today:
- for long legs and being able to jump over or around puddles
- for ending class early so i have time to grab a cup of coffee between classes
- for discovering a subject that i really enjoy: intellectual property protection (i know!)
- for saying that i will go swimming, and then actually doing it

where is my mind? in Funk-ytown

so i just looked up from writing my paper and thought there was a fish swimming in my water bottle.

yikes.

have been completely overwhelmed with schoolwork, and completely distracted by life. but had the chance to see the home opener of the hamilton bulldogs last night a la second row. it was a great game, and a nice ceremony, with the anthems performed by hamilton's own: brian melo. my throat is not feeling all that happy, but i love it when the crowd gets loud, so i do my part ... and more. funk alert!

interesting development?

it seems that election day has a chilling effect on ontario, as the temperature went from some 30 degrees to 13 degrees in just 24 hours.

this is as much of a political rant i can get going:
although i hope dalton mcguinty does not get re-elected, there is one clear advantage he has over ... let's say, john tory: choice of hockey team. other than that there is nothing much to say about politics right now because at election time it seems that political affiliation is a commodity that can be bought and sold, and right: it isn't. so much for democracy. i think i am going to skip the election show and study tonight instead, while checking nhl scoresheets repeatedly.

at the next high school reunion ....

.... i won't be a country rock star like some of us (Welcome to Jeff Catto On-Line) ... but maybe i will have some fun stories to tell, and accomplishments to share.

yeah. i have that kind of confidence.

this song has been in my head all day: andre hazes en gerard joling - blijf bij me, which instantly makes me think of this song: lange fraas en baas b - het land van.

while i was on the bus the other day, an older lady started talking to me about my t-shirt. i was wearing a "the doors" t-shirt, that i had once picked up at bluenotes for less than $5. she told me i had very good taste, and continued talking about the band, and how my parents must have been big fans. when i told her they were more into country, she shook her head, and applauded me for making much better choices .... thing is: i haven't listened to most of their music, and could not tell you one thing about the band. i was really sweating it for minute ... serves me right though, i suppose.

a friend of mine shared this with me. i love the part where luxembourg gets beat up. hmm .. i should really try to figure out how to paste the actual thing here, rather than link it. yeah ... about that.

age: 21 years and two days and counting. i am so thankful for all the messages and e-mails-> and even more thankful for those 21 years of many many blessings.

i have a lot of readings to do, so i will have to pass on the marauders-geegees game today (which i had been wanting to attend), but i am sure i will find other ways to prohibit myself from having a particularly productive day.

officially, the 2007-2008 hockey season has begun 2 minutes ago, in london, england, and is actually aired on the cbc. too bad i still have to wait 4 days before i can get really excited about it (msg me if you are interested in joining for a "beginning of the season beer and pizza" part-ay) in the meantime there is lots of news and season previews on youtube.com although i have to say there are none that i particularly like, but it is fun to re-live the exciting plays from last year anyways.

they're from the city. i am not.

i was glad to read this in the Toronto Star. i am currently taking a class in international economic institutions, and like every university course there is a lot of reference to globalization. it seems that with a renewed focus on local produce, there seems to be some opposition to the effects of free trade and flow of resources across borders. in any case, the current situation is this:

TheStar.com News How young people are being driven off the farm

i also looked for the new dairy farmers' commercial, aired on tv, but i can't find it online. but trust me, it definitely beats the milk rap, and the one where naked people were bathing in milk (i mean, water with dye).
can't afford to reminisce too much about this though, because i need to get back to reading about the city. interestingly though the course (called the North American City) attributes the existence and growth of the city to the country. take that you city folks!

high tide

I currently working on my resume, and some job applications/while also thinking about grad school applications, and came across a reference letter I had received after the summer. I never thought I was this bad ... (or that I would be unable to rival this sense of humour):
"Mornings were frequently a challenge for Gesiena but by mid-day she was usually able to speak in full sentences. She did show some sparks of initiative, particularly at the end of the day, when she could clean her desk and exit the office faster than a civil servant with job security. If we had been organizing beer and wing parties instead of Coffee Breaks I believe we could have achieved unrivalled success."
... and continues ...

"I have no hesitation in recommending Gesiena for any position where dedication, hard work, attention to detail and the ability to excel at new tasks are not requirements. If you have no other suitable applicants I suppose you could do worse than hiring Gesiena. But I am not sure how."

Allright then,

another summer come and gone

17 days until 21

23 days until TMLvsSEN

that was it already. summer is gone. school has begun. and no more vacations to be had. there are books to read. assignments to start.

i posted a little bit at the beginning of the summer, after which i realized that the struggle with the internet and the computer was not at all worth it. but now i have my very own highspeed internet connection and my new computer (which still remains nameless)!

i could spend hours to explain what i did this summer, but really there would be nothing too exciting, as i spend the entire time working. no vacations, and only a few short trips. it was fantabulous nonetheless. i had the chance to spend a couple of weeks with my grandmother (oma) and cousins from holland, visit fathom five national park, camping at alconquin park, and tons of bonfires. photo evidence:

Druppels van dauw - E. Griffioen-van Wuijkckhuijse

Nu is de wereld kostbaarder dan ooit
Ik blijf verwonders voor het venster dralen:
vannacht zijn druppels dauw als zilv'ren kralen

wijst op de troost dat vaak de mooiste dingen

happy birthday canada!

between an early trip to the airport on saturday, preparing for the church picnic and the actual picnic tomorrow, there is not much room or energy for any holiday weekend partying/trips. that means that my much desired plan to ever go visit the barclay unit will be postponed. again.

as for canada day itself, i watched some 5 minutes of the tribute to princess diana show, only to decide it was a bit too much for me. no other patriotic activities planned on this front. interestingly hearing the canadian anthem, is for me, directly associated with hockey. specifically the playoffs. and even more specifically the finals. funny how that works. i have been trying to put together a team for a ball hockey tournament, but am running in some trouble getting a whole team, without leaving anyone feeling left out.

hmmm ... yay to our new pool. it is not too luxurious, but most definitely nice for a dive after work. altogether though, i am just looking forward to go back to school ... i think. although i am enjoying work very muchly, i just get antsy to finish up. i mean one more year left, it is just too good to be true!

opnieuw terug van weggeweest

even though the nice weather has returned, my cold has not left yet and i am not really up for a trip to the beach with friends, so i stayed home to do nothing. well, that was until i got really bored and decided to updatemy blog. and i know, it has been like a month. a good month though.

there is no more hockey on, so that leaves my saturdaynights free for other activities. although the senators did not get very far in the stanley cup finals, the fact that they made it there is good enough for me. plus i am convinced that in a couple of years, after resigning almost the entire team, we will be like anaheim, only better looking. in the meantime, i followed the awards show and the draft to stay a little bit updated.

for the rest of the week i keep busy at work. i am glad to say that i am no longer working at the military base, not because i hated it, but because i got a different job: closer to home, nicer hours, more pay, and a chance to learn important skills and network a little bit as well. this past week has been especially busy as we organized a charity golf tournament! it was a great success and i learned a little bit about golf as well. also this past weeks, the canadian air forces' snowbirds were in owen sound, and being so crazy about jets as i have always been, it was really exciting, and having been able to capture some nice shots/video i was hoping to post it here, but alas, internet is not co-operating. the story of my life. well just a tiny part of it. only 2 more months + one week till school starts again? i think i will be able to get along with the dial-up for that much longer. UPDATE: i got one picture to work :-)

that means summer is passing by much faster than i can think. and i still have so many plans ... right. i better get on that.

brief smoke signals

it has been a few weeks since i have posted last. eeek! so much for my intentions to document the weekly adventures of cornpuff and mr. storkbat. although i have to admit they have not been very many places. maybe i will take them to work some time this week.

life has been as adventurous as unadventurous. the ottawa senators made it to the stanley cup finals, and the first game against the anaheim ducks is tonight. strangely i don't think i really care very much about how they do, because so far it has been an excellent journey! although i am hoping to see getzlaf square off against spezza. the game starts in about an hour, and i am pretty sure i am going to try to be smart and get to bed early for a 4.30am awakening, as i have to leave for work before 5am.

as for work it has been as interesting as it has been uninteresting. part of me really hates it, while the other part actually kind of likes it. i can't make up my mind about it, and it is really confusing.

anyways, i was not planning to write too much, and am going to do some research on barbeques as we still have to get one for mom for her birthday, which is tomorrow. eek! i am off to paint my nails. red.

that IS the way (i like it): hockey night in canada and the adventures of mr. storkbat, cornpuff and alfie jr.

i take back all the things i said about blogger and pictures and not working ... because: voila! mr storkbat and cornpuff a la hockey night in canada!

now that i am still waiting to hear back from a couple of job interviews .... but am getting some things done, such as cleaning out my room so that it can be painted. the cool thing is that i ended up reading a couple of my old diaries. my entry for november 1, 1996: (translated)

"dear diary. i have to tell you today that nothing happened. goodnight, gesiena."

i surely had a good laugh about all the crushes i had, and all the marks i got on my tests. my last entry for that year was the results from a playbackshow that we had as a year-end party for choir. my friends and i got specific haircuts, and matching outfits to sing this song: verliefd zijn - guus meeuwis & vagant . i am not sure what is up with the video. because blogger is not letting me post any videos :-(

i have to go get changed now, as i watered the trees, and got myself real wet.

as for my dearly beloved senators: YAYzors! only 8 more wins till the Stanley Cup. in the meantime i am making roadtrip plans for ottawa/buffalo. wednesday i will be going to T.O. to get my passport renewed. so maybe buffalo won't be such a bad idea. hmmm ... mom's home, i better go look productive.

adventures of cornpuff, mr. storkbat & alfonzo (2)

since blogger is being a huge PITA, I am not sure if i can be uploading any pictures. personally i like to blame it on dial-up internet, although realistically i might be a factor. i am already at 4 cups of coffee for the day and have soaked up enough vitamin D for the entire summer, as i spend most of the day gardening. i was able to teach mr. storkbat and the cornpuff the essentials to gardening. i think they got lesson #1 quite well: dispose of the fallen, rotten leafs that seem to be lying around everywhere being pretty much useless.

this weekend was pretty much boring and exciting at the same time. having a vehicle around and time to not study, i got a chance to go out with the sibs for a couple of drinks and the hockey game. we did not last very long, maybe until the end of the second period and opted to grab a couple of movies instead. good thing was that when we came home i just caught the tying goal of the third period, which put the game into overtime. still decided to watch bon cop bad cop instead, for some pretty good laughs. i mean canadian film making .... there is always something to laugh about.

on sunday it was really nice to see everyone again at church. we organized a breakfast type dinner and played a game of soccer before bible study. i am officially out of shape, but had a couple of interesting falls (and dives) and got myself a good headache with a head ball on the top of my head. not good. not good at all. anything for the team though -> woop woop!

am still jobhunting, and pretty much praying to get hired. i guess the worst thing really is having to wait. off to distract myself until 7pm.

adventures of cornpuff, mr. storkbat & alfonzo

i have decided to document the experiences of cornpuff (or crosby), mr. storkbat and alfonzo (more commonly referred to as alfie jr. and diehard fan of his nick-name-sake) in owen sound this summer. somewhat inspired by sherry's work with the penguins, I have documented their first few hours of official summer holidays. picture -> them boys sitting inside because it is raining :-(

i was only home for about 15 minutes, after which i left to watch some highschool soccer action. although it was cold and raining the amount of scoring action was great. i think the final score was 12-0 for good guys. all i could think of was that it would be nice if tonight's hockey game would resemble the same one-sided effort for the good guys.

after each hockey game, i am even more convinced of the #19 factor. seeing that spezza (#19) scored the first goal of game 1 for ottawa and zajac (#19) scored the first goal of game 1 for the devils .... hmmm i am started to believe some economic (or psychological) analysis is in order 1st intermission right now. about 20 minutes later i realize that ottawa players in the number 20's are not having such luck judging from NHL.com Report Viewer seeing that I can't watch anymore. it's all in the numbers. current score: 4-3 (OTT).
yee-hah! that's the way ... i like it (and redden scores to give us a little boost). UPDATE: final score is 5-4. i have some great pictures of cornpuff and mr. storkbat watching hockey night in canada ... but unless i figure out what beef this computer has with my plan, i am going to have to put off posting those.
as for hockey (i waited a whole week for it, so bear with me on the excessive hockey talk):

status: really trying to be nice

only two more days in the hammer ... and two more days of highspeed internet and bickering with jax. then i will be going home for the summer! until then i have one more exam that i have no desire to study for whatsoever: business history. now as i am quote, unquote studying hard, and not wasting time looking for the newest espisode of supernatural on youtube, or posting messages on facebook ...
in light of all this studying cornpuff, mr. storkbat and myself have resorted to youtube for some comic relief. and the following (familiar) three have come out as winners:

Raj Binder with NHL Playoff Predictions - love the hamilton and ottawa comments
Raj Binder and the Ottawa Senators - "the stanley cup ... or the protective cup"
Raj Binder at the NBA All Star Game - "do you wish you had gone to college?"

FYI:
april 24: today i have been in Canada for exactly 7 years. usually this is cause for celebration with the family ... but i am still writing exams. i can't help but wonder though, where have those years gone? eek! one thing is for sure: it has been sufficient to "canadianize" me to some extent. that being evident in my love for cereal and hockey
april 24: elaine's birthday! i would teach the penguins a little dance for her. such as the golddigger (G-style), but i think they are still hungover.
april 24: also the birthday of William I of Orange, Alan Eagleson (punch him ... please), Barbra Streisand, and Kelly Clarkson.
april 24: the day the Greeks enter Troy using the Trojan Horse (1184 BC)

and especially after a pretty good exam today, and gorgeous weather i am ready for some more studying and then SUMMERRRRRRR!

practice to win

... thinking of roses and the upcoming playoff series ...

just had a ball of fun at home this past weekend, and brushed up on my soccer and basketball skills, and even got some time to practice my street hockey ball control skills with the dog ... all that during a white easter. i also got a haircut, watched some hockey night in canada, played poker and had some interested and less than mature conversations.

the best comment i heard though, "this snow is completely useless, just like the toronto maple leafs." now that's the spirit!

btw this is the font that i fell in love with, and now i am going to type up some more studynotes, listen to some more boyband tunes, and daydream a little more.

good friday reflections

"Down the Via Dolorosa called the way of suffering
Like a lamb came the Messiah, Christ the King,
But He chose to walk that road out of His love for you and me.
Down the Via Dolorosa, all the way to Calvary.
The blood that would cleanse the souls of all men
Made its way through the heart of Jerusalem."

Although we can realize the truth and comfort of this every day, there is always emotions of great joy and shame on Good Friday. especially shame for not taking the opportunity to share this joy with others every day, in that light i just wanted to share the following passage from Luke 23:

"As they led him away, they seized Simon from Cyrene, who was on his way in from the country, and put the cross on him and made him carry it behind Jesus. A large number of people followed him, including women who mourned and wailed for him. Jesus turned and said to them, "Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me; weep for yourselves and for your children. For the time will come when you will say, 'Blessed are the barren women, the wombs that never bore and the breasts that never nursed!' Then " 'they will say to the mountains, "Fall on us!" and to the hills, "Cover us!" 'For if men do these things when the tree is green, what will happen when it is dry?" Two other men, both criminals, were also led out with him to be executed. When they came to the place called the Skull, there they crucified him, along with the criminals—one on his right, the other on his left. Jesus said, "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing."And they divided up his clothes by casting lots.
The people stood watching, and the rulers even sneered at him. They said, "He saved others; let him save himself if he is the Christ of God, the Chosen One." The soldiers also came up and mocked him. They offered him wine vinegar and said, "If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself." There was a written notice above him, which read: THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS. One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him: "Aren't you the Christ? Save yourself and us!" But the other criminal rebuked him. "Don't you fear God," he said, "since you are under the same sentence? We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong." Then he said, "Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom." Jesus answered him, "I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise."

It was now about the sixth hour, and darkness came over the whole land until the ninth hour, for the sun stopped shining. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two. Jesus called out with a loud voice, "Father, into your hands I commit my spirit." When he had said this, he breathed his last."

flying high

i have diagnosed myself with an extreme case of spring fever, because despite all the unsure-eties and frustrations i have to say i am a happy gal. too restless and excited to sit still and actually study ...
for the more frustrating part: all i can say about my current status is that it is a large, juicy, sweet and sour pickle. i have no idea what i will be doing in a month, and am not really getting anywhere in the decision-making process. but i wont be taking a history seminar in the summer, as the random-like allotment system did not work in my favour, so now i am trying to put my economics skills to the test in a cost-benefit analysis of the situation. plus i am trying my hardest to find a job, either here or in owen sound, which is turning out to be harder than it should be. i think altogether that leaves me praying for a solution, and wishing i could go home to consult the parent-unit. almost easter!

in the meantime i am making a sincere effort to study for exams, while also wasting my time on facebook and other internet venues that have little or no value to my education or general well-being. oh well. i did end up listening to the westlife rendition of "total eclipse of the heart" which gives me a whole new appreciation for the 80's. i mean that was a great decade. and also in the spirit of boybands i have to share that mark (for those who followed the above link: the third one from the left, with the shirt/sweater combination) is very handsome! he has very nice features ;-)

oh! must mention about the weekend! frouke, my (maybe not so) lil' sis came to visit me, which was a perfect excuse for the b-clayans of this world to go out. even though we were surrrounded by a much too large number of leafs fans who were ready to eat their plates or something ... it was bunches of fun! anyways toronto won (so no plates were eaten), ottawa won, it's all good. and i will be practicing my pool skills so next time my team can turn out as winners as well. i try.

anyways, i should be getting the laundry out of the dryer, before it burns. because i think that is possible. and i cant risk losing the vanilla smell from my clean laundry ...

i shall study. and listen to more of the same song. and update this blog more often, with hopefully some substance of thought ... or thoughts of substance? and in the spirit of the near end of the hockey season: Go Sens Go.
